There is a very small, finite amount of space on the funny pages — and it’s shrinking all the time — so comic strip real estate is very precious. The funny pages don’t expand when there are a lot of good strips in the market, so when somebody gets a spot, it means that someone else just lost one. That being said, every cartoonist I spoke to for this book was generous and graceful when they spoke about losing a slot to a competitor. Many of them saw it as a challenge — only the strong cartoonists survive, so you’d better bring your A-game every day.
He was quiet,” Foley said to me in a phone interview. “A real pleasant kid, but not at all boisterous. ” Despite this shyness, Watterson had a close group of friends who called themselves the Moosers. The group included Bowe, as well as some other friends from Watterson’s neighborhood, John Baker and brothers Brad and Jeffrey Toole. They formed a make-believe 22 L O O K I N G F O R C A LV I N A N D H O B B E S volleyball team, and though they never competed, they did make up T-shirts. Years later, Watterson dedicated The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes to these friends, bringing his cartoon childish wonder back full circle to the friends he experienced it with when he was a kid.
It was based on his German-class comic strip hero, Raumfahrer Rolf (Spaceman Rolf), who had morphed into the character Spaceman Mort in college, though Watterson never published any strips featuring that character. The latest incarnation, Spaceman Spiff, followed a blustering interstellar adventurer and his dull-witted assistant, Fargle. A sarcastic send-up of classic sci-fi strips, Spiff paid backhanded homage to flashy space heroes like Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, while tapping into the Star Wars craze.
